Troubleshooting
Resolve common permission, monitoring, report, sync, and cleanup issues.
A selected folder is not scanning
Confirm that the folder still exists and Hoolo has permission to read it. Re-select the folder if its security bookmark is stale. For Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Trash, app containers, or Library locations, verify Full Disk Access in System Settings.
A file did not match a rule
Run a fresh scan, open Dry Run, and inspect the match explanation. Check capitalization, multiple-value separators, negated conditions, folder-path scope, rule order, and whether a higher Stop after match rule intercepted the file. Run Rule Health Check after edits.
Monitoring is paused
Open the menu bar panel and start Hoolo again. When Hoolo is stopped, the menu bar owl remains in its non-blinking state and background watching, scheduled execution, and automatic disk-image ejection are paused.
A scheduled report did not appear
Confirm Scheduled Dry Run is enabled, the Mac was awake near the scheduled time, and the report folder is writable. Use Run Now to test. Open the report folder from Settings and check the newest HTML file.
iCloud sync is waiting
Enable iCloud Drive in System Settings, confirm the same Apple Account is active, and allow iCloud time to download the sync document. Local rules still execute while sync is unavailable. Use Sync Now after iCloud returns.
An empty folder is missing from results
The folder may contain a hidden file, Finder metadata, a protected item, or a nested directory that is not empty. Rescan the same root and inspect it with Finder’s hidden-file display before removing anything manually.
A disk image will not eject
Close the installer, files opened from the mounted volume, and Finder windows browsing it. macOS refuses ejection while another process is using the volume.
